Stable Hall is one of Pearl’s most distinctive historic buildings. Built in 1894 and designed by Bavarian-born architect Otto Kramer, the oval-shaped structure originally housed Pearl Brewery’s draft horses and keg carts, which supported beer delivery throughout San Antonio.

Its practical design, with tall ceilings, generous openings, and an open interior, was shaped by daily work. Today, those same qualities support a different kind of movement: concerts, dancing, and public gathering.

A Building Made for Work

In its first chapter, Stable Hall was exactly what its name suggests: a stable. It held roughly sixty horses and the carts used to move Pearl beer through the city before motorized delivery became standard. Its oval form, brickwork, and repeated entrances were not ornamental gestures alone. They were practical responses to the movement of animals, equipment, and brewery operations.

That working history remains legible in the building’s character. Stable Hall feels substantial because it was built for use, with beauty found in proportion, material, and purpose.

From Stable to Event Space

As Pearl Brewery changed, the building changed with it. After its stable years, the space became Pearl Corral, then later Jersey Lilly, an event venue remembered for a more theatrical interior. Jersey Lilly reopened in 1971 and operated until 2002, after which the building continued to serve as an event venue in different forms.

As its function changed, the building remained active in San Antonio’s social life. No longer tied to brewery deliveries, Stable Hall continued to hold gatherings, performances, and events, carrying its usefulness into a new public chapter.

Restoration and a New Music Venue

Stable Hall’s most recent transformation brought the building back into focus as a live music venue. Its restoration drew from historic architectural records, with artisans recreating details such as the stone pediment, cupola, and custom ironwork that had been altered or removed over time.

The venue reopened in 2024 with modern sound, lighting, mezzanine seating, and multiple bars, allowing it to support concerts, private events, and cultural programming while preserving the building’s historic form.

What Happens at Stable Hall Today

Stable Hall now hosts concerts, dance nights, and community events, with calendars featuring artists such as Shawn Colvin, Alejandro Escovedo, Los Lobos, Black Pumas, Portugal. The Man, and Ladysmith Black Mambazo, alongside local and regional performers. Recurring events like Two-Step Tuesdays pair beginner-friendly dance lessons with live music.

That range feels true to the building’s history of movement. Horses and carts once passed through its doors. Today, the same structure holds musicians, dancers, audiences, and private gatherings.

A Living Part of Pearl’s Cultural Landscape

Stable Hall helps explain why Pearl feels layered rather than newly made. Its value is not only in preservation, but in continued use: a former brewery stable now carrying music, movement, and public gathering into the present.

Cellars belongs to that same broader story of adaptive reuse at Pearl. Set within the historic district, it reflects the relationship between original materials, working buildings, and contemporary life that gives the neighborhood its depth.
